The international caps world record holder Ahmed Hassan is considering a return from retirement as he muses upon the idea of playing football professionally once more.
Ahmed Hassan had ended his playing career after Zamalek were victorious in the 2013 Egypt Cup final against Wadi Degla in Gouna, but the 39-year-old Egyptian legend recently acknowledged he would like to return to the football pitch.
The former Anderlecht and Beşiktaş midfielder mentioned that because he was not sure the league would commence, and due to ‘the fan situation in Egypt’, his decision to hang up his boots was easier, but now it seems his feet are raring to return.
Ahmed Hassan said he consulted his former Egypt boss Hassan Shehata – whom he achieved numerous team and individual awards with between 2006 and 2010 – who had similarly came out of retirement during his time as a player, commenting that Shehata assured him: “The experience of returning back worked successfully after leaving the field for a while.”
When asked about why he accepted a role in the national team technical staff, he said: “I agreed to take part to gain working experience to work as a manager in the future.”
Ahmed Hassan has 17 team and 3 individual honors, having played for Aswan, Ismaily, Kocaelispor, Denizlispor, Gençlerbirliği, Beşiktaş, Anderlecht, Al Ahly and Zamalek.
Hassan holds the world record in international caps with 184 games, scoring 23 goals – including a memorable long distance effort against South Africa in the 1998 African Cup of Nations final in Burkina Faso.
